As this year’s Veteran’s Day comes, we take a look into who some of Teamwarfare’s veterans are, their experiences, and the games they play. On this day or remembrance, we can pay our respect to all of the veterans that have served their nation.
TheRedneck: Why did you pick the service branch you joined?
Zombee:Kind of an entertaining story
Zombee: I wasn't sure what branch I wanted to join
Zombee: And back in those days the recruiters had quotas
Zombee: I worked at a big grocery chain when I was 17 and actually had three recruiters working under me
Zombee: On for the AF, one for the Marines, and one for the Army
Zombee: One night, I had them all three in an office for an evaluation
Zombee: And they'd been trying to recruit me for ages
Zombee: I get paged that there's a call on line 1 for me, so I answer it
Zombee: It's the Marine's partner, asking if he can talk to me about joining
Zombee: So I say, "Listen, I only have on question: Can you give me a jet with my name on it?"
Zombee: And he stutters, "Um, no..."
Zombee: "Then I have nothing to talk to you about"
Zombee: 5 minutes later
Zombee: "Matt Wheeler, line 1"
Zombee: Airforce this time:
Zombee: I asked him the same question
Zombee: His answer, "Um... I doubt it... but I'm not really sure..."
Zombee: *Click*
Zombee: Ten minutes later, the page comes again
Zombee: I get the phone and it's the Army
Zombee: He starts talking and I interrupt:
Zombee: "Look, only think that matters, is can you give me a jet with my name on it?"
Without missing a beat, the guy says, "No, but I can definitely get you a helicopter."
Zombee: I signed up the next day.
What Exactly is Veteran’s Day?
Veteran’s Day originally started out as Armistice Day. At 5 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 1918 the Germans signed the Armistice, an order was issued for all firing to cease; so the hostilities of the First World War ended. In 1938 November 11th officially became a national holiday. The name was changed to Veterans' Day by Act of Congress on May 24, 1954 to accommodate other veterans that were not involved in World War 1.
**More information on the History of Veterans Day can be Found Here.**
TheRedneck: Tell me about a couple of your most memorable experiences.
WhitmansGhost: Well, My first jump stands out the most...after all of the practice and drills it was still a very unnatural act, but what a day for it, clear blue sky's and a 4-5 knot winds...
WhitmansGhost: skipping over all of the pre-boarding checks, we were in the air at 1300 ft. over a well-known drop zone outside of Fort Benning, GA. I remember the pre-combat checks...
WhitmansGhost: and the all too familiar "5 minutes" Those 5 minutes flew by like seconds!
WhitmansGhost: I was the 15th guy out the door. It was a static line jump, of course. I remember taking my 6 up and 6 out (6 inches up and 6 inches out that they teach you in airborne school)...
WhitmansGhost: and the next thing I felt was the tug of my parachute harness...
WhitmansGhost: I grabbed my risers and looked up to check my chute, and all I could hear was the sound of the wind going thru the guide wires
WhitmansGhost: it was beautiful!
WhitmansGhost: when I saw I was getting close to the ground, I put my feet and knees together like I've been taught and prepared to do a PLF (parachute landing fall)
WhitmansGhost: I really can't tell you how hard I hit the ground, but I did it with a smile!
Veteran’s Day Facts
Regardless of the day of the week, Veterans Day is observed on November 11.
The date was chosen to commemorate World War I, which ended on November 11, 1918.
Veterans Day was established by Congress on June 4, 1926.
The purpose of Veterans Day and Memorial Day are often confused. Memorial Day is for honoring military personnel who died in service to their country. Veterans Day is for thanking ALL men and women who have served honorably in the military during times of war and peace.
There are currently about 25 million living veterans.
Over 48 million Americans have served in the military during war and peace since 1776.
Every year, about 80,000 veterans are buried in one of the cemeteries of the National Cemetery System.
TheRedneck: Did your military experience influence your thinking about war or about the military in general?
Godadone: Yes, I think that people get delusions of grandeur as to what people really do in the military, 95% of the time we are training, or preparing for what we have to do. Rarely do we actually engage in putting foot to ass.
TheRedneck: What were some of the pranks that you or others would pull?
Godadone: We used to wake the new people up in the middle of the night and give them meaningless tasks to do. For instance, I had one new Sailor go to the flight deck and count the number of aircraft tie down padeyes. She was there all day.
After interviewing different veterans here at Teamwarfare, this writer can conclude that most of the veterans enjoy First-Person Shooters as their primary games. From Medal of Honor, to Tribes 2, to Battlefield 2, to Call of Duty, these veterans love their FPS. Although most feel that their military experiences give them no real strategy advantage, they can all agree on one point:
TheRedneck: Do you get frustrated when players use weapons in ways other then meant in real life? (Example, using an AT4 ((Anti-tank)) Missile to kill a player in a bunker) The Replies:[OWN]Hercules: Nah, just a game...do what it takes!
Zombee: Absolutely not. In real combat, you'd use whatever resources you had to complete the mission. if it works, by all means use it.
WhitmansGhost: Nah, it's just a game, hell if ya gave me a nuke to kill a player in a game I’d use it.
Godadone: Nope. in warfare, if you aren't cheating, you aren't trying hard enough.
They all agree that you do what it takes to win the battle.
Thank You Veterans!
All of the staff here at Teamwarfare would like to thank each and every veteran for their service to their country. Without it, our country would not be what it is today. Every minute of service is greatly appreciated, and no matter what happens, nothing can change the fact that these people had what it takes to defend the country that we treasure so much.
**To every veteran, this writer gives his utmost respect to you. Thank you.**
"Americans should always honor our veterans. At this moment, we especially need the example of their character. And we need a new generation to set examples of its own, examples in service and sacrifice and courage. These veterans have shaped our history, and with their values, your generation will help guide our future." -- President George W. Bush, Oct. 30, 2001

Nicely Done.
Props to you for taking the time to help everyone here share some of our memories and experiences. I personally do not regret a single minute of the 8 years I spent with "Uncle Sam" as it was a major building block in my life.
As for the Jump School reference and refreshing.... I will never forget "Delta Company... The Rock"

Very nice. Thanks for the time and effort on the article. Also thank you to all fellow veterans who served and all those still serving.
I come from a family w/ a lot of military history. One grandfather served in WWII as a Lieutenant Colonal in the Air Force Bomb Groups, my other grandfather was a Corporal in the Army as a combat medic in WWII, my grandmother was also in the Army and served as a nurse as a 1st Lieutenant also in WWII, my step-dad was a Navy SEALs master chief in the Navy, my uncle served in the Marines as a MP Master Sergeant, my cousin was a Lance Corporal who also served in the Marines, my nephew is currently serving in the Marines as a Corporal who has done two tours in Iraq, my little brother is just now finishing is job training in the Air Force, and myself was a Sergeant in the Army.
I miss it at times (not the 5:00 am wake up calls) and I sure don't miss the saying "If it ain't rainin' we ain't trainin'". My best prank as a PFC (E-3) I sent a Sergeant First Class (E-7) who was inprocessing our unit down to supply to fill out a form called a TR-EE, oh was he mad to say the least. Luckily the CSM (E-9) was in on it. Best part was it was my buddy's (also a PFC) drill sergeant who was transfered to Germany. Next best prank was sending some newbie down to the weapon's room for a blank adapter for a Howizter.
Thanks again to all veteran's, God Bless and come home safe. Post edited by |OCG|Sgt_Bull_Randleman at 11/19/2005 8:55:22 PM
