Russia is moving warships (filled with marines and tanks) off the coast of Tartus and giving the US the finger (Russia has continued to provide arms to Assad);
The US is moving more naval ships to the Persian gulf and (kind of) giving Russia the finger;
An article in FP yesterday argued that Russia is trying protect its naval base. Whatever happens, they want to protect the only naval base they have outside Russian waters.

On a serious note now. I have some concerns because collateral damage or some retard Muslims attacking the Russians and blaming the US could escalate things. We just need to have more ships, with bigger guns and more troops. _______________________________________________________________

One of Russia's biggest (only) exports is oil. Instability in the region fueled by anti-west movements drives up the price of oil.
Syria is the only place where replacing the government likely means better relations with the west & Syria. And/or weaker relations between Syria and Iran. Syria's is Iran's proxy right next to Israel and near Saudi Arabia. Syria's government getting tossed out helps stability in the region.

No, Russia will not risk war with the US, even our weakened economic state. That would lead to a cataclysmic collapse of their economy through oil as Western Europe is one of their biggest buyers. It is in their best interest to to keep Assad afloat for geopolitical reasons in the Middle East as well as the Tartus "port in the storm" they have no where else.
