My iPhone went swimming, and after a week of drying it out, I'm resigned to the fact that it is bricked.

So, I'm wondering if apple still rules the world of smartphones, or if someone else has caught up/passed them?

What are your recommendations, and why?

depends what you do with your phone. android phones have more features. iPhones are generally smoother at the expense of being less feature filled. for example unless you jailbreak an iphone, you cant use third party keyboard. do you know how much faster swype is than a stock pecking keyboard for a lot of people? a lot. android has had great cloud features far longer than iOS. if you use gmail, it's insanely convenient. apple has caught up but google is still ahead.

if you are heavily invested in the google ecosystem, it's generally always more feature filled in android.

other things like lets say i install a few different photo apps that tweak photos in different ways. in android, i tap on a photo in any one of the gallery apps i want to use and it immediately gives me the option of exporting that photo directly to any app i installed that can use it. in a matter of seconds i am now playing with that photo in the app i installed for the very purpose of playing with my photos. in iOS's case, since it is so locked down, it only does that with very few apps apple has baked into the OS. you have to save the photo. go open the app, find that photo. it can be cumbersome. this repeats itself in many cases. again it all depends if you will use those things. i do all the time.

the iPhone had a massive better app lead, but at this point on the phone level, the app difference is closing fast. in the tablet arena, iOS has a big lead, but not so much on phone OS's.

out of those three android phones i wish i could say the galaxy nexus. being a google phone it gets clean unskinned android OS straight from google and always first (unless you flash your phone). however samsung gave that phone notoriously poor radios, so they tend to get weaker signal strength than HTC. so that leaves me with the OneX and GSIII. it's a toss up to me. i know the OneX has probably the sickest camera on a phone, even besting the iPhone, at the least tying it. however i hate phones that have no removable battery and/or expandable storage - the OneX has neither AFAIK. i like to use my gadgets a lot, and carrying a slim spare battery in my wallet was far more portable than carrying a charger everywhere. i do that for my HTC rezound. so then you have the galaxy SIII. the reviews i read tell me it's pretty sick. it's definitely a bit big, but again that's personal preference. my 4.3" phone has never been to big for me. the 4.8" galaxy SIII would not for me either, as it is very thin.

i heard the radios are good on this samsung. i am highly impressed with my samsung galaxy tab 7.7. thing is built beautifully and works just as.

between all those phones i would go with the SIII first, OneX second, galaxy nexus third. iphone if that's your thing.

This is a perfect description. I develop on all platforms as part of my research (so it is hard for me to give a consumer level suggestion). It really comes down to whether or not you buy into iOS as the ideal experience for you or not. There's nothing wrong with it if you do- they are great pieces of hardware and have a great seamless experience for the most part.

Well SC, your opinion is always welcome, though I have yet to see a BB that I like.

Thanks for the opinions Puddin. I have researched all day online, and it seems that all the reviews are biased, like someone at macworld thinks the iphone is better, and someone at pc world thinks the android is better lol.

One of the issues I have always had with apple products is that for all the intuitive, user friendly features, some important ones are very non user friendly. Namely itunes. I hate having to sync, and back everything up so you dont lose it during the sync, I hate that while I can easily enough put stuff on the phone, taking it off is a royal pain in the ass. And lets not get into what happens if your computer goes tits up, and you have to set up itunes on a new rig. What a nightmare.

But then, I do a lot of surfing on my phone, and from my experience (I have friends and family members with android phones) safari kicks the crap out of them. Maybe thats just their phones, not sure.

I lean towards iphone, but only because my wife has one, and my 2 best friends, and both my bro-inlaws, and facetime is handy. Are there any android phones that allow you to do that?

Other than that, the only things I really use anymore are facebook (which is horrible on iphone, or is it like that on all phones?), viber (love that app, have a lot of overseas friends that have it), heytell (basically a walkie talkie app, think of it like voice messaging), checking my emails, and assorted other things im sure any phone could handle (calculator, weather app, flixster, etc).

As for pictures, it would be awesome to have a good camera with an extremely user friendly editing app. I like taking pictures, but I am not a great photographer, I take pictures at all the wrong angles, in all the wrong light, at all the wrong times lol.

So with this in mind, is it worth losing all the apps I have paid for to go to an android phone? I mean, iphone is all I know, and while some of the bugs make me wish I had another phone to try, will switching wow and amaze me for what I use the phone for?

Oh (and a big oh at that). How do the HTC or S3 antennaes rate compared to the iphone 4? I have the 3gs right now, and the signal strength really leaves something to be desired.

In short Galaxy S 3 is the big winner right now.
I'll add info shortly.
The camera alone on the Galaxy S3 is worth it just for that alone.
The most kickass thing about the camera on the S3 is that while shooting 1080p HD video you can snap photos as fast as your finger can tap the screen while it's shooting the video without any disruption.

Here's a link to a video showing a comparison of the Siri vs S-Voice.
It won't allow me to embed it.

Hell i have this phone & i didn't know the damn thing was water proof.

I can't make a recommendation between the two android phones. As far as iOS vs Android, it comes down to whether or not you like customization or refinement. Is the phone a toy, in your opinion? If so, Android is the better choice. Is the phone going to be used productively, specifically within a Microsoft Exchange environment? If so, iOS is the better choice. Do you make heavy use of Google or Amazon services? Android wins there. Are you going to use the camera very often? If so, (unless things have changed recently), the iPhone has the lead in that regard. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong either way. It's like the Linux vs BSD argument, because Android is Linux and iOS is BSD. Which is better? In the long run, it pretty much doesn't matter because they are both *nix systems that do 99% of the same shit. Pick whichever one is more appealing to you.

Personally, I don't like Android because the UI is to cluttered for me. Granted, I'm referring to Android 2.x. I have no frame of reference for 4.x.

I like iOS because
A) I'm very used to it. I've been using it since 1.0
B) I prefer the UI in almost every way.
C) I fucking despise Google.

Oh, and iPhones don't require iTunes anymore, which totally doesn't suck ass on OS X, like it apparently does on Windows. I don't know that first hand because I've never used it on Windows.

I will say that the Google navigation in Android is top notch. Apple's maps app in iOS 6 might be as good when it's released, but I doubt it.

4x is definitely quite a bit ahead of 2.2. by now apps are optimized and use ICS features and its definitely a very nice OS upgrade. feature wise and smoothness wise. samsungs exynos processor is known to be pretty awesome. i can vouch that the dual core version is fricking awesome on a 7.7 tablet. the galaxy s3 has a newer generation exynos i think. whatever the case it's got balls.

can still stutter on some phones, depends how much they are skinned. my galaxy tab running stock samsung skinned 4.0.4 is very smooth.

4.1 or jelly bean has project butter. main goal is totally smooth transitions. however, since all phones are skinned besides the galaxy series, it will take months for the GSIII or ONEX to get it. but they are pretty smooth still from what i read.

my rezound is on a custom ROM. never stutters. but that's not stock either.

1. Galaxy
2. iPhone

I've never owned the other phone. I love the Galaxy, but one thing a hate about these fucking phones is that you have to buy a $30 a month data package. I'm not sure if things have changed, but I just don't use the fucking internet on a phone.

I bought a pos pre paid phone. I can wait until I get home to use the internet. I think that is the bottom line, if you are going to do a lot of online stuff, then get one of these phones.

Nathan, what do you mean that iphone doesn't require itunes anymore? Elaborate a bit. Like, it doesn't need itunes to be updated? Or it doesn't need itunes to get your stuff (videos, music, apps) on and off the phone? Because I currently use copytrans to put music from my computer onto my iphone, but it only works the one way. Getting it off is a pain.

Compare the SGS3 to the next iphone when it's released later this fall. That'd be a fairer test. The camera on the S3 is not EXTREMELY better than the 4S, like some are making it out to be, but you can definitely see the improvement.

If you really like your iphone, I'd suggest buying a cheap phone until the new one is released to see if you want it. If not, the One X looks great, as well as the S3.

Can you snap photos with the iphone 4 while you are shooting 1080p hd video?

& when they release the iphone 5 there will be the galaxy S 4 to be even further along.

Yeah, you can get over the air software updates. Music, movies, and apps you buy from apple are tied to your Apple ID. They can be downloaded and synced to any iOS device or iTunes over the internet. No USB cable required.

I just plugged my iPhone into my PC at work. I do not have iTunes installed. Windows 7 asked if I wanted to import the pictures on it. Non-iTunes music, to the best of my knowledge, will still have to be uploaded via iTunes, but, if you have iTunes Match which is 25 bucks per year(not sure if there is a basic free version or not), it can be used to sync to any iTunes software or iOS device over the internet just like if it was bought from Apple.

I've been Mac-less for a few months now and got a new iPhone from work a couple of months ago. It has never been synced with iTunes on a computer at all. I have no issues with it whatsoever.
