The New Jersey General Assembly voted Monday night to approve a marijuana decriminalization bill, Assembly Bill 1465, even after Gov. Chris Christie (R) threatened to veto it. The measure passed on a vote of 44-30, not quite enough votes to override a veto unless a current "no" vote switches over to the other side.

Under current state law, possession of 15 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine. AB 1465 would make small-time possession a civil offense punishably only by a $150 fine for a first offense and a $200 fine for subsequent offenses.

The bill now awaits action in the Senate. The entire legislature typically takes a summer break in July and August, but the bill could move before then.

Just days ago, Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (I) signed a decriminalization bill into law there, making it the ninth state, along with California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New York and Oregon, to define small-time pot possession as a civil -- not a criminal -- offense.

Five other states typically lumped in as decriminalization territory actually treat small-time possession as a misdemeanor, but only allow fines, not jail time. Those states are Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, and Ohio. One state, Alaska, has legalized the in-home possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Basically they are saying you won't do jail time but you will pay a fine. That means less court costs, less people in jail for having joint which lowers costs, but by fining them it still brings in revenue to NJ.

Still illegal to drive high, operate machinery in public high, companies can fire you for being high at work. Its also illegal to drive drunk or on prescription oxycodone, etc...

But douche bag Chris Christie wants to veto the bill. Get this, he says "Christie also noted the federal government still considers marijuana an illegal drug, and said the state shouldn't undercut that policy."

WOW! Fuck states rights, the federal government said its illegal. THE FEDS HAVE NO JURISDICTION. This is a states issue. People want this guy to run for president? Good bye states rights, good bye constitution, hello federal domination of our daily lives.

Christie has failed to see a single medical marijuana dispensary open even though the law pass right before he took office 2 years ago. The man has a personal agenda, and doing what the people say based on voting or based on their elected representatives is not part of that agenda.

Here is a chance to significantly lower costs in NJ, free up courts, open the jails so we can keep real criminals in there longer and not forced to release do to over crowding, it is what the people of the state want (60% according to polls with 10% undecided) and their elected represenatives have voted to pass a law according to the states constitution.

AND PEOPLE WANT THIS POMPOUS SELF IMPORTANT BULLY FOR PRESIDENT? If you look up "asshole" in the dictionary it should have a picture of Chris Christie.

Sounds kind of like you.

I'm a little mixed on this issue. I think pot should be legal because the government shouldn't tell us what we can put in our bodies. I also think that we have so many stupid people, they will ultimately create more problems for themselves and society if we legalize pot.

Can you imagine what this already obese fucking country is going to look like after you legalize pot?

It's called gluttony, but that is an entirely different topic.

Personally this is why the republicans suck. They would attract more voters and be able to tax it. Everyone wins.

Unlike you I live in the real world. Govt is not going away. So I'm willing to compromise. If the costs drop to smoke it then who cares if they tax it.

The U.S. has a great big debt. If you minimized the Federal government to it smallest functioning size possible to meet the original intent of the constitution and returned all rights to the states.... we still have a great big debt.

Even if the U.S. never spends another dime we have a great big debt. The only way to pay off that debt is taxation.

If they legalized marijuana it would significantly reduce the cost of the "war" on drugs, reduce court costs, reduce prison costs. Reducing cost does not pay off debt, it just reduces any additional accumulation of debt.

Even if you said we will only tax legal marijuana until the current debt is paid off and, you can't spend another dime ever again, we still have a great big debt that has to be paid by taxes.

Would we want any regulation of legal marijuana at a state level? Would we want police and courts to keep people from driving stoned? How would states pay for these services? Taxes.....

Unless you are a complete anarchist you have to admit there will be some level of taxation even if we achieve a utopian society with minimal government with states providing the bulk of that government.

Stop kidding yourselves into thinking that legalization of it & then taxing it will solve our debt issues. It won't even put a dent in it.
Ask the states that have legalized it & see how their debt is coming along.
Same thing for creating job growth. Ask the states if it has helped.
It hasn't & it won't

FYI, I'm all for the legalization of it, but stop kidding yourself.
They could tax the shit out of gas, beer & cigs even more than they currently do & it won't make a difference.
Has raising the taxes on cigs & gas solved anything? Nope.

Who said it fixes it? FYI no state has legalized marijuana. Some states have decriminalized it and have legalized MEDICAL marijuana. Huge difference.

Legalization immediately reduces police costs, court costs, jail costs. Sales of legalized marijuana vs medical marijuana would be significant. While it is not a panacea, it is a source of income that also reduces cost.

Being against it because it doesn't completely fix every issue with our debt means we shouldn't do anything unless the action completely fixes our debt. I disagree. It may take 1000 actions combined to fix our debt (not 1000 taxes - cost cutting, reduction in government, reduction in spending, etc...).

There's next to zero difference. Michigan for example. If you tell your doctor you have anything wrong with you, you can get a card for it. There are shops anywhere you'd like to go & buy with anything you can think of to buy. From pot to candy with it, cookies, you name it, they have it.
YOU as a card holder can also file to be a "farmer" & grow it yourself & sell it yourself. You can sell it to any shop or anyone with a card. They don't have to be in a shop in order to buy or sell it to people with a card.

#1) I have never been drunk, smoked pot or smoked.

#2) pot should be legal. Most drugs should be. People are going to get high whether we want them to or not. Paint cans, whip cream, whatever, they will find a way and pot is one of the milder ones(addictions and side effects compared to others including prescription drugs). So we should legalize certain drugs to help steer people to safer ones.

#3) Why not tax it? I'm not for taxes, but virtually every item you buy is taxed. I would rather have a legal drug taxed rather than illegal untaxed. And let's face it, tickets is a form of taxation. the small percent you pay is probably mild compared to the $150+ tickets.

And prostitution should be legal to.

The governments job should mostly be about protection from other people and countries. It shouldn't be trying to keep us morale or protecting us from ourselves.
